Thomas GILOU – Director | Réalisateur

It is in 1979 that Thomas Gilou signed his first medium-length film, « General Lee and his Teddy Boys », a forty-minute documentary about a Parisian rock band.
After he created the production company Amorce Fim, he shot in 1984 « The girafe combines », a highly acclaimed short film, which got a César nomination for Best Short Film. Thanks to it, he also earned in 1986 a contract in for the production of a film about the African circles established in Paris: the comedy « Black mic mac » will be a great success.
The world had to wait 10 years before Thomas Gilou directs new movies, becoming then a specialist of « ethnic » comédies : in them, he skilfully mixes humor and seriousness, making several references to the Beurs with « Raï » in 1995, the Jews of Trail with « Would I lie to you » in 1997, Latin Americans with « Chili con carne » in 1998. Standing at the third place of box office in 1997 with « Would I lie to you again », he made a sequel in 2001 that will be an even bigger success.
Thomas Gilou then directed several documentaries for the televison, among which the now famous « Words of stars », about children hidding during the Second World War.
In 2007 came « Michou d’Auber », the story of a small Kabyle of Aubervilliers collected by a family from Berry in the 60s, which reunated the couple Depardieu-Baye.
Still focused on the theme of adoption, he shot « Victor » in 2009 : in this one, an octogenarian is welcomed by a wealthy family, after being expelled from his home.
In early 2012, Thomas Gilou returned to his former love, with « Would I lie to you! 3 », the latest highly awaited episode of the series.
In 2016 he directed 4 episodes of the first French series produced by Netflix, « Marseille », a series that depicts with quite some realisme then life of the city.

C’est en 1979 que Thomas Gilou signe son premier moyen métrage, « General Lee et ses Teddy Boys », un documentaire de quarante minutes sur une bande de rockers parisiens.
Après avoir fondé la maison de production Amorce Fim, il signe en 1984 « La Combine de la girafe », court métrage très remarqué, qui décroche une nomination au César du meilleur court métrage et lui vaut d’être contacté en 1986 pour la production d’un film sur les milieux africains de Paris : ce sera une comédie « Black mic mac » un grand succès.
Il faudra attendre près de 10 ans pour que Thomas Gilou réalise de nouveaux films devenant le spécialiste des comédies « ethniques », où il mêle habilement l’humour et le sérieux des références, chez les Beurs avec « Raï » en 1995, les Juifs du Sentier avec « la Vérité si je mens » en 1997 , les Latino-Américains avec « Chili con carne » en 1998. Classé 3eme au box office 1997, la vérité si je mens donnera lieu à une suite en 2001 qui connaitra un encore plus grand succès.
Thomas Gilou réalise plusieurs documentaires pour la télévision dont le très remarqué « paroles d’étoiles » sur les enfants cachés de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
En 2007 « Michou d’Auber », l’histoire d’un petit Kabyle d’Aubervilliers recueilli par une famille berrichonne dans les années 60, marque les retrouvailles du couple Depardieu-Baye.
Toujours sur le thème de l’adoption, il réalise « Victor » en 2009, dans lequel un octogénaire est accueilli par une famille aisée, après avoir été expulsé de son logement.
Début 2012, Thomas Gilou retourne à ses anciennes amours, avec « La Vérité si je mens ! 3 », dernier épisode très attendu de la série.
En 2016 il réalise 4 épisodes de la première série Française produite par Netflix, « Marseille », une série rythmée qui fait la part belle à la représentation réaliste de la ville.
